Not only is she hard working and passionate but she possesses the attention to detail required to not only send out the best possible food but also come up with ideas for the future of that dish to improve it.”

To be a young apprentice in any industry requires dedication and commitment, Chloe has fitted in with her team and has crushed all challenges in her path, Adam continued; “I have seen many chefs with a lot of potential but quite a few don’t possess the mental strength or ability to put their “ego” to one side when they know themselves they could be brilliant. Chloe though does believe this, but is modest and carries on without boasting or getting too big headed, which is a trait I really do commend.”

Excellence in Business Training Awards 2017
The most distinguished companies in the South West celebrated the incredible training achievements of individuals and businesses at an inspiring and glittering awards ceremony in January 2017 at the Headland Hotel. The Excellence in Business Training Awards 2017, hosted by CCB (Cornwall College Business), recognise exceptional training and development in organisations across the region.

Sponsored by Pirate FM and with media support from Business Cornwall, the awards had a number of emotional moments as individuals explained how much of an impact giving opportunities to young people had on their lives.

How will Brexit change HR in the UK?

How do the Apprenticeships reforms impact on you and your business?

The CIPD qualifications Cornwall College Business Training offer, at both Level 3 Foundation and Level 5 Intermediate will delve into areas such as these, drawing from and exploring today’s issues, bringing relevance and realism to your CIPD qualifications and support for all those involved at all levels whether in HR or Learning & Development.

From April 2017 the new apprenticeship levy will be applied to all UK employers with an annual wage bill of £3 million or more - whether or not they offer apprenticeships themselves, fundamentally changing the way apprenticeships are funded. If you are responsible for the training and development of your business it’s an opportunity to ask yourself how this fits in with upskilling my workforce and to take advantage of this opportunity to upskill or consolidate your own development through a Level 3 or 5 Learning and Development CIPD Qualification.

The implications of Brexit are, as yet, undefined however whilst it may be safe to assume that the government won’t simply repeal all EU-related employment law, the landscape of HR will undoubtedly change and adapt during this time of return to self-governance and we will all have to determine and action areas as diverse as the impact of Employment Law Changes, changes in workforce and labour market trends as well as how to effectively manage and communicate change. The CIPD Brexit Hub is just one of the dedicated resources and sharing platforms you have access to as a CIPD learner with Cornwall College Business Training.

The A&P Group is committed to employing apprentices and has seen over 120 recruited across numerous trade disciplines since 1990. Training Options for All - Level 2 to 6 Diploma

Mill Hill Quarries Ltd. was established in 1959 and operates two slate quarries in Devon and Cornwall – Mill Hill Quarry in Tavistock and Trevillett Quarry near Tintagel. These quarries produce roofing slate, building stone, paving, tiles and aggregates. The quarries extract slate from the Devonian period, making the slate approximately 350 million years old.

What were the business issues or challenges that were addressed by engaging in training?
The main issue was the potential disruption to a small business like theirs, they couldn’t afford to have personnel offsite for any length of time even in low numbers. CCB assessors of who have quarry industry experience come into the workplace to work with them to minimise any disruption to their production.
Another important consideration for them as a small business was the cost of providing training for all their staff. CCB identified funding which helped soften the financial burden, which was especially important as trading had been difficult for them over the last three years as with all other businesses in the quarrying sector.

The training they undertook.
All their staff have completed Processing Operations or Plant Operations NVQ Level 2 depending on their individual job roles. The Quarry Managers have successfully completed the Health, Safety and Environmental Management for the Extractives and Mineral Processing Industries Diploma MPQC Level 4 and the Managing Director has also completed the Level 6 Diploma.

What impact and benefits has the training had on the company?
The training programme has improved morale amongst their workforce; people see that the Company is investing in them to give them a transferrable qualification which makes them feel more valued as employees. It has also proved something of a team building exercise as they usually have 3 to 4 staff training at any one time, so there is a feeling of “all being in it together” they are also able to discuss health and safety issues amongst themselves.

“The training undertaken with CCB is an MPQC qualification which is industry recognised and will help us to demonstrate the competence of our workforce, which is a legal requirement of the Quarries Regulations 1999.We have received nothing but a helpful and friendly service from CCB, they are willing to work around us and are good at maintaining contact.”

What were the business issues or challenges that were addressed by engaging in training?
As Claire was new to the Health and Safety role she needed to gain more in depth knowledge of the legislative and regulatory framework surrounding health and safety law.  The resort had grown quickly and organically over the previous four years and the Directors saw the need to provide a dedicated, qualified presence in order to instigate process and a positive health and safety culture.

The training undertook:
Claire undertook the National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety Level 3 NEBOSH which was part funded through the ESF Convergence Project delivered by Cornwall College Business.

What impact and benefits has the training had on the delegate and company?
The training has been invaluable and provided Claire with the necessary knowledge and confidence to put into place new initiatives and procedures.  The overall standards of health and safety on the resort have now improved and in turn, this has reduced insurance premiums and potential PI claims.  It has provided Claire with a foundation of information to enable her to ‘know where to look’ to get the full answers and to understand the major issues and pitfalls. The resort has many different health and safety needs due to the variety in facilities and activities carried out, from the Flowrdider, to the spa and construction.  The NEBOSH has enabled Claire to address these varying needs and identify priorities when at first they may have seemed overwhelming.

“Undertaking the training with CCB has enabled me to positively influence the health and safety culture at the resort and adapt procedures to the varying needs of the business such as the Flowrider, Restaurant or Health Club.”

CMI Management & Leadership Training for your Business

Rosemullion Veterinary Centre is based in Falmouth, Helston and Penryn. The Falmouth branch is a fully equipped Veterinary Hospital, the Helston branch is a large purpose-built branch surgery and their newest surgery in Penryn is a dedicated small animal surgery.

What were the business issues or challenges that were addressed by engaging in training?
When Stuart first joined the company as practice manager he found it difficult to work with two key members of the management team. All three agreed on the objectives to move the business forward, however communication amongst them was not as good as it was hoped. An element of Stuart’s role was to become involved in a new project, to plan and implement the building of a new purpose built veterinary hospital. Stuart had not been involved in a project of this magnitude before and was therefore, understandably nervous. Part of the reason for Stuart attending the course was to give him more confidence in his ability and so that he could also face the challenges such a project would bring.

The training undertook:
Stuart undertook the Management & Leadership Diploma Level 5 CMI which was part funded through the ESF Convergence Project delivered by Cornwall College Business.

What impact and benefits has the training had on the company?
Stuart has been managing staff in his own way for some time. By formalising his training it has given him confidence that he isn’t “just making it all up as he goes along” there is sound proven business logic behind what he was already doing. Part of the course encouraged Stuart to look at his management style and the personalities around him. This provided Stuart with the insight to change the way the management team interacted with each other and now they are working well together.

“The trainers were supportive and encouraging and the work was at times testing. Whilst there is a certain amount of theory, it was the practical application that benefited my work. For me it most importantly gave me the confidence to make the changes that I needed to make to become a more effective manager.”

Stuart Saunders, Practice Manager - Rosemullion Veterinary Centre

Bespoke training options for your business - Lost Gardens of Heligan

Heligan, family owned for more than 400 years, is one of the most mysterious estates in England. After decades of neglect, the gardens were bought back to life. The award winning garden restoration is internationally acclaimed; but now extends into well over 300 acres of wider estate, leaving the project far from complete. Heligan staff aims for the estate to remain a living and working example of the best of past practice, offering public access into the heart of what they do.

What were the business issues or challenges that were addressed by engaging in training?
After 16 years of the continuous successful senior management leadership, it was recognised that the business needed to go through a significant change in both style and direction. Heligan’s management recognised that this change was a priority with the need to implement training methods and styles to ensure that the outcome would be the skills and knowledge necessary. The focus for Heligan’s employees was to gain a clear understanding of their business objectives, who had ownership, and whose responsibility it was so that everyone were able to successfully move forward as a team.

The training undertook:
Working with Cornwall College Business, a bespoke training programme was developed for Heligan’s supervisors and managers. Each staff member undertook Leadership and Management training at a level most suitable to them through either a certificate or apprenticeship route.

What impact and benefits has the training had on the company?
The training has supported Heligan’s staff through a time of change. They now all have an understanding of what the business objectives are and what they are all working towards. It has given them the confidence to express their views and provided insight into the various styles of leadership to achieve their goals.

“The Lost Gardens of Heligan after many years of the same directorship has recently undergone significant structural change; to assist in this process we employed CCB to rollout a bespoke training programme. We wanted to re-enforce in all managers and supervisors, the lost arts of delivering a highly focused task driven workforce fit for the 21st century. It was wonderful to witness, the growing sense of confidence in all participants the longer the training went on. They felt better able to cope with the change and hungry for empowerment.”

George Elworthy, Managing Director, The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Customer Service Training for Your Business

M A Grigg started in 1970 as an agriculture merchant dealing with the local farmers. Since then the business has grown from a one man band to an organisation employing over 40 staff and dealing with the general public, builders, gardeners as well as farmers throughout Cornwall. The business has grown by giving good personal service.

What were the businesses issues/challenges to undertake training?
The company has been very successful in meeting the customer needs, but wanted to offer training to their staff. New employees had started, but limited product training was given and they wanted to introduce the company’s mission. The company didn’t have a company tree to identify people’s positions and responsibilities within the business.

The training undertook:
Working with Grigg’s we came up with a tailored Customer Experience Workshop and a Telephone Technique Workshop. The Customer Experience Workshop was delivered to every member of staff ensuring the same message of what the company is about, what is expected from each member of staff and what the company will do for each staff. The company tree was explained to all, for clarity of responsibilities.

The Telephone Technique Workshop was introduced to all staff in the retail side of the business, so that they were uniformed in the way they answered the telephones, messages were taken with the correct information so that they could raise their level of customer service.

What impacts and benefits has the training had on the company?
Griggs experienced some resistance towards the training proposed where some staff was not looking forward to it. However, after each training day, everyone remarked on how much they got from the workshops and how professional the trainer was.  As a result we hope that all of Grigg’s staff has been more positive in their work since their training.

With the increase of competition in their market place the training will help Grigg’s to stand out from the crowd giving great customer service.

“CCB made sure that the courses were tailored to cover all aspects of what we wanted and nothing was too much trouble. The trainers were fantastic and our staff liked the way the courses were presented.”

Trevor Goodman, Manager, M A Grigg

What were the businesses issues/challenges to undertake training?

The training they undertook:
Crantock undertook the following training courses, Managing Safety Level 3, HACCP Principles at Level 2 and 3, along with Food Safety Level 3.

What impacts and benefits has the training had on the company?

Following the training Crantock are now in a position to carry out more specific training for their staff. They have taken on two Engineering Apprentices with the intention that they will qualify and become their engineers and possible managers of the future.
