Improve your finance skills

Guide your business through financial challenges

The business environment is always evolving and changes happen all the time so we must adapt to keep on top. Some of these recent changes include Making Tax Digital and auto-enrolment, which make the role of the accountant more demanding. Long gone are the days of just preparing the accounts and doing an annual tax return. Whether working in-house or for an agency, accountants need to be armed with the knowledge and skills to navigate through numerous financial challenges.

Technology – having your finger on the pulse
Making Tax Digital is a Government initiative to make HMRC into an online system.
By 2020 most businesses will be required to keep track of their tax affairs digitally. This new digital system will not only tell you how much tax you have to pay, but will help you budget for future business growth.

Connecting – drives business success
Relationship building internally and externally is a great way to identify opportunities
and influence decision-makers. To do this, accountants need to understand the personal impact of financial data and be able to translate and communicate this across all levels of a business. Today, accountants need to review all elements of business through integrated reports to drive business success.

Adapt – skills keep you and your business up-to-date
The ability to adapt and keep up-to-date with technical skills and knowledge will help your business identify future trends, giving you a competitive edge. Through training and apprenticeships for your workforce, we can help you address the critical needs of your business, enabling you to mould an effective and productive workforce.

Adam Cawood, Head Chef and Chloe’s mentor at the hotel, is very proud of Chloe and commented; “I do believe she is destined for big things in the catering world. Not only is she hard working and passionate but she possesses the attention to detail required to not only send out the best possible food but also come up with ideas for the future of that dish to improve it.”

To be a young apprentice in any industry requires dedication and commitment, Chloe has fitted in with her team and has crushed all challenges in her path, Adam continued; “I have seen many chefs with a lot of potential but quite a few don’t possess the mental strength or ability to put their “ego” to one side when they know themselves they could be brilliant. How will Brexit change HR in the UK?

How do the Apprenticeships reforms impact on you and your business?

The CIPD qualifications Cornwall College Business Training offer, at both Level 3 Foundation and Level 5 Intermediate will delve into areas such as these, drawing from and exploring today’s issues, bringing relevance and realism to your CIPD qualifications and support for all those involved at all levels whether in HR or Learning & Development.

From April 2017 the new apprenticeship levy will be applied to all UK employers with an annual wage bill of £3 million or more - whether or not they offer apprenticeships themselves, fundamentally changing the way apprenticeships are funded. If you are responsible for the training and development of your business it’s an opportunity to ask yourself how this fits in with upskilling my workforce and to take advantage of this opportunity to upskill or consolidate your own development through a Level 3 or 5 Learning and Development CIPD Qualification.

The implications of Brexit are, as yet, undefined however whilst it may be safe to assume that the government won’t simply repeal all EU-related employment law, the landscape of HR will undoubtedly change and adapt during this time of return to self-governance and we will all have to determine and action areas as diverse as the impact of Employment Law Changes, changes in workforce and labour market trends as well as how to effectively manage and communicate change. The CIPD Brexit Hub is just one of the dedicated resources and sharing platforms you have access to as a CIPD learner with Cornwall College Business Training.

Nursery Apprenticeships with Naturally Healthy Team

Naturally Learning Ltd is a Cornwall-based day nursery operator comprising of three nurseries situated in Poltair, Charlestown and Truro. The OFSTED Outstanding nursery employs 45 people across the three sites and specialises in quality childcare for children aged 0-5 years. Naturally Learning has recently refurbished the nurseries and with ERDF funding was able to increase the number of staff and grow the business.

What were the businesses issues/challenges to undertake training or to take on an apprentice/s?
Due to the nature of the industry, within a nursery environment there is a legal requirement to have qualified staff and a certain ratio of staff to children. With the teams focus on the business and the children, keeping them safe, this can affect the consideration of apprentices.

Naturally Learning has a very positive reputation with customers and to keep up the OFSTED Outstanding achievement the company has high expectations and requirements of staff. They are required to be knowledgeable and experienced which makes it difficult initially for apprentices to succeed the brief.

Recruiting their apprentice
Naturally Learning took on a Level 3 Early Years Educator apprentice and by training with the individual in their environment meant that the company’s ethos and beliefs are embedded.
To meet their high expectations and learn about the company’s ethos and beliefs, apprentices have been provided with a tailored support programme that runs alongside their college qualification. This programme focusses on aspects of the job that Naturally Learning feel are important as a business.

What impacts and benefits has the apprentice had on the company?
Naturally Learning has thrived in recruiting apprentices in their team and would look to do this again in the future. By training their apprentices in house this will benefit the company in the long run by resulting in the perfect staff member ready to employ, saving on recruitment time and costs. Not only will the individuals be childcare qualified, but they will know how to represent Naturally Learning perfectly.

The process at the nursery, including their support programme has meant that their apprentices know the business inside and out, become part of the team and end up staying on after their apprenticeship has finished.

“Taking on an apprentice has provided us with enthusiastic young people who are not only willing to learn, but become part of our team at Naturally Learning Ltd. By training in house we believe we can create the next generation of outstanding educators.”
Sarah Hood, Nursery Manager at the Truro Nursery
