Agriculture Apprenticeships in Cornwall & Devon

“I studied the Agriculture Apprenticeship Levels 2 and 3, and I now work full time on my family’s robotic dairy farm. The courses gave me the knowledge I need to look after and manage cows, as well as giving me more confidence in my abilities and helping me with my decision making. Alongside this role I carry out relief milking on two other farms, carry out herd health and help manage cows on another farm.  I made some great friends during my time at Duchy College and my most memorable experiences are going to Poland and the Czech Republic to learn about different farming methods and carrying out a post mortem on a cow.”

Chloe George is currently undertaking a Professional Cookery Apprenticeship at Trevalsa Court Hotel, a 2 rosette beach hotel, restaurant and bar in Mevagissey. Coming straight from school into a professional kitchen Chloe was at first very shy and timid. After only 6 months she has really come out of her shell. She is hard working, passionate; her attention to detail is outstanding. Chloe is always willing to help anyone; she is inquisitive and competent enabling her to work on serval sections within the kitchen. Chloe is now running her own larder section, planning menus and ordering, for a young person of only 17 years of age, she is said to be destined for big things.
With career goals of hopefully becoming a Restaurant Manager or Head Chef in the future Chloe is confident that she has found her ideal career path, she said; “When I won the award a few weeks ago I felt very happy and I felt as if this is the first step in my career.”

Adam Cawood, Head Chef and Chloe’s mentor at the hotel, is very proud of Chloe and commented; “I do believe she is destined for big things in the catering world. Not only is she hard working and passionate but she possesses the attention to detail required to not only send out the best possible food but also come up with ideas for the future of that dish to improve it.”

To be a young apprentice in any industry requires dedication and commitment, Chloe has fitted in with her team and has crushed all challenges in her path, Adam continued; “I have seen many chefs with a lot of potential but quite a few don’t possess the mental strength or ability to put their “ego” to one side when they know themselves they could be brilliant. Chloe though does believe this, but is modest and carries on without boasting or getting too big headed, which is a trait I really do commend.”

How will Brexit change HR in the UK?

How do the Apprenticeships reforms impact on you and your business?

The CIPD qualifications Cornwall College Business Training offer, at both Level 3 Foundation and Level 5 Intermediate will delve into areas such as these, drawing from and exploring today’s issues, bringing relevance and realism to your CIPD qualifications and support for all those involved at all levels whether in HR or Learning & Development.

From April 2017 the new apprenticeship levy will be applied to all UK employers with an annual wage bill of £3 million or more - whether or not they offer apprenticeships themselves, fundamentally changing the way apprenticeships are funded. If you are responsible for the training and development of your business it’s an opportunity to ask yourself how this fits in with upskilling my workforce and to take advantage of this opportunity to upskill or consolidate your own development through a Level 3 or 5 Learning and Development CIPD Qualification.

The implications of Brexit are, as yet, undefined however whilst it may be safe to assume that the government won’t simply repeal all EU-related employment law, the landscape of HR will undoubtedly change and adapt during this time of return to self-governance and we will all have to determine and action areas as diverse as the impact of Employment Law Changes, changes in workforce and labour market trends as well as how to effectively manage and communicate change. The CIPD Brexit Hub is just one of the dedicated resources and sharing platforms you have access to as a CIPD learner with Cornwall College Business Training.

Nursery Apprenticeships with Naturally Healthy Team

Naturally Learning Ltd is a Cornwall-based day nursery operator comprising of three nurseries situated in Poltair, Charlestown and Truro. The OFSTED Outstanding nursery employs 45 people across the three sites and specialises in quality childcare for children aged 0-5 years. Naturally Learning has recently refurbished the nurseries and with ERDF funding was able to increase the number of staff and grow the business.

What were the businesses issues/challenges to undertake training or to take on an apprentice/s?
Due to the nature of the industry, within a nursery environment there is a legal requirement to have qualified staff and a certain ratio of staff to children. With the teams focus on the business and the children, keeping them safe, this can affect the consideration of apprentices.

Naturally Learning has a very positive reputation with customers and to keep up the OFSTED Outstanding achievement the company has high expectations and requirements of staff. They are required to be knowledgeable and experienced which makes it difficult initially for apprentices to succeed the brief.

Recruiting their apprentice
Naturally Learning took on a Level 3 Early Years Educator apprentice and by training with the individual in their environment meant that the company’s ethos and beliefs are embedded.
To meet their high expectations and learn about the company’s ethos and beliefs, apprentices have been provided with a tailored support programme that runs alongside their college qualification. This programme focusses on aspects of the job that Naturally Learning feel are important as a business.

What impacts and benefits has the apprentice had on the company?
Naturally Learning has thrived in recruiting apprentices in their team and would look to do this again in the future. By training their apprentices in house this will benefit the company in the long run by resulting in the perfect staff member ready to employ, saving on recruitment time and costs. Not only will the individuals be childcare qualified, but they will know how to represent Naturally Learning perfectly.

The process at the nursery, including their support programme has meant that their apprentices know the business inside and out, become part of the team and end up staying on after their apprenticeship has finished.

“Taking on an apprentice has provided us with enthusiastic young people who are not only willing to learn, but become part of our team at Naturally Learning Ltd. By training in house we believe we can create the next generation of outstanding educators.”
Sarah Hood, Nursery Manager at the Truro Nursery

Training Options for All - Level 2 to 6 Diploma

Mill Hill Quarries Ltd. was established in 1959 and operates two slate quarries in Devon and Cornwall – Mill Hill Quarry in Tavistock and Trevillett Quarry near Tintagel. These quarries produce roofing slate, building stone, paving, tiles and aggregates. The quarries extract slate from the Devonian period, making the slate approximately 350 million years old.

What were the business issues or challenges that were addressed by engaging in training?
The main issue was the potential disruption to a small business like theirs, they couldn’t afford to have personnel offsite for any length of time even in low numbers. CCB assessors of who have quarry industry experience come into the workplace to work with them to minimise any disruption to their production.
Another important consideration for them as a small business was the cost of providing training for all their staff. CCB identified funding which helped soften the financial burden, which was especially important as trading had been difficult for them over the last three years as with all other businesses in the quarrying sector.

The training they undertook.
All their staff have completed Processing Operations or Plant Operations NVQ Level 2 depending on their individual job roles. The Quarry Managers have successfully completed the Health, Safety and Environmental Management for the Extractives and Mineral Processing Industries Diploma MPQC Level 4 and the Managing Director has also completed the Level 6 Diploma.

What impact and benefits has the training had on the company?
The training programme has improved morale amongst their workforce; people see that the Company is investing in them to give them a transferrable qualification which makes them feel more valued as employees. It has also proved something of a team building exercise as they usually have 3 to 4 staff training at any one time, so there is a feeling of “all being in it together” they are also able to discuss health and safety issues amongst themselves.

“The training undertaken with CCB is an MPQC qualification which is industry recognised and will help us to demonstrate the competence of our workforce, which is a legal requirement of the Quarries Regulations 1999.We have received nothing but a helpful and friendly service from CCB, they are willing to work around us and are good at maintaining contact.”

CMI Management & Leadership Training for your Business

Rosemullion Veterinary Centre is based in Falmouth, Helston and Penryn. The Falmouth branch is a fully equipped Veterinary Hospital, the Helston branch is a large purpose-built branch surgery and their newest surgery in Penryn is a dedicated small animal surgery.

What were the business issues or challenges that were addressed by engaging in training?
When Stuart first joined the company as practice manager he found it difficult to work with two key members of the management team. All three agreed on the objectives to move the business forward, however communication amongst them was not as good as it was hoped. An element of Stuart’s role was to become involved in a new project, to plan and implement the building of a new purpose built veterinary hospital. Stuart had not been involved in a project of this magnitude before and was therefore, understandably nervous. Part of the reason for Stuart attending the course was to give him more confidence in his ability and so that he could also face the challenges such a project would bring.

The training undertook:
Stuart undertook the Management & Leadership Diploma Level 5 CMI which was part funded through the ESF Convergence Project delivered by Cornwall College Business.

What impact and benefits has the training had on the company?
Stuart has been managing staff in his own way for some time. By formalising his training it has given him confidence that he isn’t “just making it all up as he goes along” there is sound proven business logic behind what he was already doing. Part of the course encouraged Stuart to look at his management style and the personalities around him. This provided Stuart with the insight to change the way the management team interacted with each other and now they are working well together.

“The trainers were supportive and encouraging and the work was at times testing. Whilst there is a certain amount of theory, it was the practical application that benefited my work. For me it most importantly gave me the confidence to make the changes that I needed to make to become a more effective manager.”

Stuart Saunders, Practice Manager - Rosemullion Veterinary Centre
